Mall of America, Bloomington, MN

Project Summary

Mall of America™ is the nation's largest retail and entertainment complex. The 4.2 million square foot facility is home to more than 520 shops and is located in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington, MN

As a facility committed to being eco-friendly, management is always looking for products and programs to help reduce the Mall’s carbon footprint. One such area is the Mall’s two nearly identical seven story parking ramps. Recently, Mall of America examined the lights in a section of these ramps and teamed up with Beta LED™ to conduct a test project using light emitting diodes (LEDs) luminaires.

These new lights use fewer than 100 watts—less than half the energy of the ramps traditional lights. Since the two ramps have approximately 4,000 lights installed, the Mall of America anticipates savings between $300,000 and $500,000 in electricity costs if all of the lights were changed.

Anna Lewicki Long, Mall of America spokesperson, is pleased with the project’s initial results. "What we are finding is these lights are extremely bright and illuminate very well. The Mall’s energy costs are being cut in half."

Metro Market, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Project Summary

Roundy's Metro Market is conducting a test in a parking structure adjacent to their downtown grocery store. The top and middle levels of the three-level structure have been retrofitted with Beta LED's THE EDGE fixtures, replacing the high pressure sodium lights one-for-one. The middle level has a total of 35 canopy fixtures while the top level includes 12 pole lights and three wall packs.

A two-month study is in process to determine total energy savings and evaluate the bright white light from the LED fixtures. The Roundy's team plans to include customer opinion of the lighting through a series of surveys during the testing period. Based on the results after the evaluation period, Roundy's will consider installing THE EDGE fixtures at some of the company's other locations, including 153 stores, three distribution centers and one commissary.

City of Austin, Texas

Project Summary

Austin, Texas was recently ranked by MSN as the number one greenest city in America. And it's no wonder since city leaders passed a conservation resolution almost 10 years ago and established the first green building program in the country. As part of the newly announced Austin Climate Protection Plan, all facilities, fleets and operations will be carbon-neutral by 2020, and 100 percent of city facilities will be powered by renewable energy by 2012.

As part of this initiative, the city recently changed the first floor of a four-story parking garage to Beta LED's THE EDGE™. This test site, along with numerous others throughout the city, are propelling Austin's mission of becoming an All-LED City.
