Serving Up Sustainability – Burger King franchise realizes benefits of LED luminaires

Burger King® Commitment to the Environment
The average American stops at a quick-service restaurant 150 times a year.  With this many impressions fast-food restaurants have great opportunity to create positive environmental impacts as they enter the green-building arena. Recent efforts in corporate strategies and enterprising franchisees are sprouting new models on how to serve up sustainability. Burger King is looking to lead the sustainable building charge among national and global fast food chains.

Burger King (BK) is the number-two hamburger chain, with over 12,000 restaurants around the world in 73 different countries.  Over 90 percent of BK’s fast-food restaurants are owned by franchisees.

BK is continually researching and developing ways to make changes that will be positive on the environment without compromising operational standards. The company’s employees and leadership are engaged and committed to develop ways to deliver consistent policies and practices across all of their operations globally.

Burger King/Group 2029, Savoy, IL
As the owner of nine Burger King (BK) franchises, Group 2029 Inc. is a private company founded in 2005 by Maruti Seth.  The newest restaurant in the group, located in Savoy, Illinois, a town of 9,000 people centrally located in the state, was recently constructed and opened in September 2011.

The new restaurant has implemented efforts toward a green vision that takes the BK’s signature flame-broiling core attribute a step further by creating an exceptional and memorable dining environment.  These efforts entail a smaller carbon footprint, reduced utility costs and increased labor efficiencies than seen in traditional fast-food facilities. Examples include the incorporation of Energy Star® certified refrigerators and a more efficient broiler system.

Energy-Efficient CREE® LED Luminaires
To further reduce utility costs, the Savoy, Illinois BK location explored and selected energy-efficient Cree® exterior luminaires with BetaLED® Technology instead of traditional metal halide (MH) fixtures.  The LEDway® luminaires installed in the parking lot of the restaurant provide superior lighting that meets the required uniformity and spill light requirements of the site, as well as the sustainable illumination performance requirements that were set.  The 304 Series™ luminaires mounted under the canopies of the windows, customer entrance, and drive-thru bay of the restaurant provide targeted light without spilling into adjacent areas.

Additionally, with a mind towards employee and patron safety, THE EDGE® security luminaires illuminate the employee and service entrance behind the building and the perimeter walkways.

The company was willing to make the initial investment for Cree® LED luminaires over a traditional lighting system because they anticipate recovering the additional cost of the LED system in less than one year.  Also anticipated longer term is annual energy cost savings of over $4,000 and approximately 74 percent energy reduction over traditional lighting technology.

“It just didn’t make sense to build a new restaurant with the latest technology and building materials but install outdated lighting fixtures,” said Seth.  “The CREE® luminaires provide very consistent and uniform illumination without having any light spilling to adjacent properties.”

After being open approximately six weeks, the restaurant is exceeding expectations and receiving positive consumer feedback, particularly on the exterior lighting.  The parking lot, restaurant perimeter and walkways are all brilliantly illuminated, providing a welcoming and safe environment for patrons and employees.
